Hywel Griffiths Bwtrimawr Ammanford

EVANS REES & SONS

Gwaun Cae Gurwen

Fe sefydlwyd y cwmni fel siop groser yn 1900 ar Stryd y Gât, Gwaun Cae Gurwen. Daeth y busnes i gael ei alw yn Siop y Gât oherwydd ei leoliad, cafodd ei adeiladu ar sylfeini’r hen dollborth.

Tyfodd y busnes a phrynwyd y lori gyntaf yn 1930 pan gymerodd y cwmni yr enw Evan Rees a’i Feibion, Garej Siop y Gât. Yn ychwanegol at hyn roedd hurio ceir a cherbydau i Ddyffryn Aman yn rhan bwysig o’r busnes.

Erbyn 1935 roedd y busnes wedi datblygu ac wedi prynu ei hers gyntaf ar gyfer ymgymerwyr lleol unigol ar y cychwyn. Ond erbyn y 50au fe ddechreuodd y cwmni drefnu angladdau i wasanaethu’r ardal.

Parhaodd hyn hyd 2008 pan ymunodd gyda chwmni Hywel Griffiths a’i Feibion, gan alluogi Kim Jenkins (Rees gynt) i allu dal ymlaen i ddarparu gwasanaeth personol i rannau uchaf Dyffryn Aman.

Founded in 1900 as a grocery shop in Gate street, Gwaun Cae Gurwen, the business became known as Gate shop due to being built on the foundations of the toll gate.

The business expanded and purchased its first lorry in 1930 and become known locally as Evan Rees and Sons, Gate Shop Garage. In addition to this the business also provided the Amman Valley with wedding and hackney cars.

By 1935 the business further expanded by purchasing the first hearse in the Amman Valley. Initially the hearse was to provide independent village undertakers, however by the 1950’s the company began proving funeral services to the Amman Valley.

Evan Rees and Sons continued to provide its services to the Amman Valley and in 2008 joined Hywel Griffiths and Sons, enabling Kim Jenkins (nee Rees) to continue to provide a personal service to the Amman Valley.
